The dermatologist Dr. Cairns just called Shalken’s host mother (Beth Nolan) with some encouraging news. The official diagnosis is not calcinosis as we originally thought, but “Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM).” The doctors will start by giving him his immunizations and then building up his body before giving him steroids. (The steroids will eventually be tapered off.) He will also need to be accepted by Shriners Hospital as part of his treatment, but the doctors seem very hopeful that with steroids and some surgery, he can have a better quality of life!!
