Update on Wilner “Pistache”

“What a Great God We Serve.”

This is Wilner, but we call him “Pistache” (peanut, in Creole). At the time the photo was taken where he was sitting on my lap, we had a Mobile Medical Clinic. Daniel, our interpreter, found him and brought him to me. I thought he was about “seven” but when his father came, he said he was “fifteen!”

He had been to “first grade,” in the mountains, but his father was poor and not able to feed him. So, Pistache had severe malnutrition! We brought him back to our orphanage and put him the hospital, but, he was not doing well. His stomach was still horribly swollen, and he was retaining lots of water… “Kwashiorkor malnutrition.” It took a long time, lots of care, and love. When he entered school, he failed several classes. We were going to take him out of school, but he insisted, “a man without an education is a blind man, walking in the dark.”

He has been doing yard work to help pay for his education. He just finished his last year of school this summer and is waiting for the “results!” He loves the Lord and wants to be a “Journalist!” We love you, Pistache!
