Update on some of our Sustainability Programs

Update on some of our Sustainability Programs: 9-16-16 12:35 PM

This is an update from Rad Hazelip – Assistant Executive Director, Love A Child:

Last week I was working in Haiti and looking in on many of the Sustainability programs. We are seeing great success on several of our programs, thanks to the supporters who help us to “help the Haitians help themselves.”  First, I checked in on the Poul Mirak Co-op and it is back making a good profit and all the Co-op members are very happy with their new operation. While I was there, chickens were selling rapidly so that families could have a nice chicken dinner on Sunday.

Next, I watched Wilner planting some of the newly donated fruit tree seeds – Carambola, Sapote, Star Apple, cashews, etc.  We are very thankful for Mike D. and his family, and our new supporters who sent the seeds to us to expand our edible plant nursery stock. It rained three nights while I was there, so Wilner and the crew took advantage of the conditions to plant more Vetiver grass along the main drainage way at the marketplace.  This “beautification project” also importantly serves to protect the soil from eroding when the rains come.

Yes, the trees, vegetables, and other plants and chickens all look great, but the most gratifying thing is to witness the renewed spirit of the people in the community. They are very happy and have such great hope now. Thanks to all those who help us change these lives for generations to come.
