What Does it Mean to be Poor in Haiti?

Haiti is the “poorest country” in the Western Hemisphere. We watch the TV showing us hundreds of thousands of migrants heading across the Mexican border to the States. They are running from gangs in the streets. The vast majority are not running from starvation. They just want a better way of life…

It is different here in Haiti, where hunger has taken over. The children and people are running from “death by starvation.” If a Haitian reaches the States, he will not ask for a handout. He will find a job quickly, learn English, get another job, and will forever be thankful that he lived to touch the soil of our country.

We visited some children yesterday here in Haiti, and while interviewing them, I cried all the way through. We see children like this all the time in Haiti…

This is Yadson. He is from a little stick-and-mud village called Nangad. He and his mother work hard all day and end up with a handful of green bananas. Look at him closely. Have you seen any migrants on TV that look this bad? Yes, there are poor everywhere we look, but we cannot overlook these children. There is a Haitian Creole Proverb that says, “the child who cries inside your house and the child who cries outside your door are the same.”

Thank you, partners, because you always go “the extra mile” to share your food. You helped us to share thousands of meals in the village of Nangad and many more, and we will continue to do so!

Thank you for sharing your food.
