“The Counter Proposal…”
Matthew 19:16-22 tells the story of a spoiled, very rich, young man who is asking Jesus what he should do to have eternal life. He knows something is “lacking.” Jesus tells him, “Keep the commandments,” but Jesus already knows that he has been doing this. The young rich man answers with, “I’ve kept them all from my youth. What else do I lack?” Jesus gives him a “counter proposal.” He says, “Sell what you have and give it to the poor, and I will transfer your wealth to Heaven where thieves cannot touch it, come and follow me.” (Maybe Jesus was inviting him to become a disciple.) But, he left “sorrowful for he had great possessions.” It is not a sin to possess great wealth, but it becomes a sin when the wealth “possesses us.” Have a great day! Sherry
