“What Will the Word ‘Yes’ Cost You?”
“Whom shall I send and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.” Isaiah 6:8 – The late, wonderful Kathryn Kuhlman said that serving Jesus would cost you everything. She was right! From the very moment Bobby and I said, “yes” to Jesus, to come to Haiti, it cost us everything. We often wonder why there are “fewer and fewer missionaries on the field” nowadays, especially in Haiti. And, when they come, why don’t they stay? The cost is too great. Maybe they had a “better job” at home, or they could not leave their mother, or father, their grown children, or their beautiful house they had built. They could not leave their church or their friends. They could not leave that “good paying job.”
For Bobby and me, saying, “yes” to Jesus, meant missing the birthdays of our grandchildren, spending time with our two grown children, saying “good-bye” to my elderly mother as she stood at the door waving her handkerchief. It cost us our friends, security and the comfort of the States. It cost us everything, but it has been worth it all. God is calling dedicated, servant-hearted missionaries to serve in Haiti, but if you are not willing to forsake all, and “take up the cross,” then stay home. You’ll never make it here. If you don’t want your heart broken into a million pieces each day, then stay home. If you are fearful and afraid, then stay home. We missionaries here in Haiti are on the “front lines,” and we face enemies each day. We face sickness, death, hunger, starvation, and much more. But, our hands are on the plow, and we cannot look back. If we did, we would just become a “pillar of salt.” Today, if Jesus is asking you to do something, anything, it may cost you “everything,” but it is well worth it! God bless you, Sherry
