Word From the Mission Field

“Being Faithful with the Little Things…”

When Bobby and I got married, we had only $40. Later that day, my brother gave us $100, so we started our young married life with $140. Bobby sold citrus trees for a living and it was tough making ends meet. We read that Jesus said, “Go ye and preach the Gospel to every creature,” so we began our ministry on the street corners, preaching in the African American projects, not far from my mother’s house. It was “the poor, preaching to the poor.”

We borrowed chairs from the funeral home to set outside and had a microphone and asked one humble, sweet black sister in the Lord, if we could run the cord through her window. Her name was Sister Baber, and she helped support us on her small income until the day she died.

Later, we began ministering in churches, had large crusades under a Gospel tent, and then were called to go to Haiti, and later began our television ministry. When we came back to the states, we would have fellowship lunches with our friends, and as much as she could, Sister Baber would come to our luncheons. She would sing a song often, “about a train!” She was a sweet, humble, loving, giving woman, who raised a wonderful family and supported us until the day she died.

We have had a lot of wonderful friends, many who have done some great things. But when we had the luncheons, Sister Baber was missing. It wasn’t “how much she had given,” but it was her faithfulness. We still feel her love until this day.

I am sure that when she saw Jesus face to face, He must have said, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Thou has been faithful over a few things. I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou, into the joy of thy Lord.” Matthew 25:21

We miss you, dear sweet Sister Baber! And we are so grateful and thankful for your “faithfulness,” which encouraged us all those years!
