Word from the Mission Field – 11-07-18

“Dust the piano? Vacuum the floor? Scrub the toilets? Who me?”
That’s what most of us would say if our pastor asked us to do this. Many years ago, when we had just begun to work in Haiti, we came back to minister in a church in California that supported us. While there, we met with the great Bible teacher, John Avanzini, who also had a church in California. One day, on a Saturday, he took us to visit his church…
When we went inside, there were ladies vacuuming the floor…instantly, they came up to us, told us their names and said, “This is my ministry. I get to clean the house of the Lord!” Bobby and I just didn’t know what to say. Evangelist John Avanzini took us to the pulpit area. When we got to the pulpit area, there were ladies shining the piano, vacuuming the floor, and dusting the other instruments. They all came up to us and told us their names and said, “This is my ministry. I shine the piano.” The other said, “This is my ministry. I shine the drums.”
We went inside to where they had Sunday school classes. There were ladies and men straightening chairs and just enjoying getting ready for Sunday. Each one came up to us and told us their name and what their “ministry was.” Bobby and I stood there with our mouths hanging open. Some of these were very wealthy people, but Pastor John had taught them to “serve” with joy! That experience happened more than 35 years ago, and we have never forgotten it.
“But he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.”
Luke 22:26 – You can do “small things in a great way,” which is better than doing “great things in a small way.” Sherry
