“… a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
Have you ever been in trouble? Have you ever faced an angry mob blocking the road with burning tires, and holding gallons of gasoline in their hands? Have you ever been in a four-wheel drive jeep with bad tires about to slip off the side of the mountain? Have you ever had an angry mob jump on your car with rocks in their hands and threaten to kill you? We have… we know what “trouble” is…
Once, we had a volunteer team going to the mountains of Savaan Pit, Haiti. The mountains were high, and the “roads” were not even roads. We had junk trucks that broke down all of the time. These trucks just loved to “break down in the middle of nowhere.” Two of our friends, Mark and Evie Ostrander, and others were on this team. When we got to the mountains, we broke down. The sun was HOT! We were in the middle of nowhere, with no water and had miles and miles to go… on foot.
All of a sudden, a very expensive four-wheel drive jeep pulled up beside us all… out jumped two men in black jackets. They had gold chains around their neck, expensive watches, and most of all, shotguns! “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” (Psalm 46:1-2) Now, we really needed that “very present help in time of trouble!”
The guys walked over to us and said, “What’s the problem?” We told them we were missionaries, (I wanted to add, “poor missionaries.”) that our pickup broke down, and we had to get back to Petionville.
They walked over to their vehicle… (We thought they were getting more guns.) They pulled out some gigantic chains, and went over and hooked our junky broken-down pathetic pickup to their nice new expensive vehicle and said, “Get in. We’ll tow you!” Away we went through the mountains… to safety.
When we got out, we found that they had been “bird hunting,” and they worked at a store their parents owned. We made sure when we got back to find them and thank them! One of them owns a store right here in Haiti and we do “lots of business with him!” Ha!
God knew ahead of time that we would break down in the middle of nowhere in Haiti, in the mountains, so He sent two angels to help us out! Do not fear! God’s got this! Give Him all the praise! Sherry
