“Your night-watchman…”

It is 3:59 a.m., and I just read a scripture that I love… “He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” (Psalm 121:3-4)

A good friend of ours passed away a few years ago… “Fre Dodo.” (Brother Do Do, in Creole.) He used to be a famous witch doctor back in the 1960s and was even the private houngan for Papa Doc Duvalier; that is until he became a Christian. He once told me the story of how he met his second wife and how he became a Christian.

He had major Voodoo powers and could turn a person into an animal; such as a cow, a donkey, a dog, etc. (Whether we believe this or not, all Haitians do.) He had a wife and six children, and each year he “gave” (dedicated) one to Satan. One after another, his children died and then his first wife. So, his Voodoo powers were very strong.

He had his eyes on a beautiful young woman who was a devout Christian. He decided to come into her small house (hut) at night, bring a rope, and do his Voodoo magic. He would turn her into a donkey and lead her away with him, and then when he got back home, he would turn her into a woman again.

In those days, people never locked their doors. So, he went into her hut while she was sleeping and brought his “rope” to turn her into a donkey. He did his magic and waited… Nothing happened. She slept soundly. He began again and again, and nothing happened. He started making groaning noises and that woke her up. She screamed and yelled, “What are you doing in my house? I know who you are!” He again explained who he was and that this was the first time his spell didn’t work. He wondered, “Why?” She firmly replied, “I am a Christian! Jesus is my night-watchman! He watches over me and He never slumbers nor sleeps, and I’m not afraid of you! You can’t turn me into anything because I am a Christian!”

With that, he began to beg her to “save him and make him a Christian!” She went and got her pastor, and they prayed! He accepted Jesus that night, married the young woman, had six kids and became a great evangelist! So, never be afraid. You have the same night-watchman. He never gets tired, He never sleeps, and He will always be there for you 24/7! Have a great day! Sherry
