Isaiah 43:2…
What a great God we serve! Bobby and I had to make a trip from Port-au-Prince to Fond Parisien, where we live in Haiti. We knew that “things were very dangerous in Haiti, politically,” but we had passed through these areas before to do feeding programs and we were not too worried. However, it was late in the afternoon and “things were heating up” on the streets. Young men all over Haiti were angry with the president, angry at life, and angry because there were no jobs. They were full of rage and now in control. Things were so bad that the only way we could get to our orphanage was by our “ambulance.” Philemond was our driver, and Ezekiel (who knew many street people) was in the front, and in the back in plainclothes was a policeman with a gun. We didn’t think there would be a problem, but there were “many problems.” No normal people or machann sellers were on the streets, but there “were” many gangs of young men with guns and rocks…
We ran into roadblock after roadblock; gangs with large rocks and guns turning us around. After making quite a few “detours,” we finally made it to the large town next to us, Croix-des-Bouquets. Immediately, things went “from bad to worse.” The gangs stopped our ambulance and surrounded us, banging violently on the windows of the ambulance. You could see the hatred in their faces… The “spirit of fear” is very strong, and we must learn to overcome it with the Word of God…
“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” Isaiah 43:2
We stared at all these faces surrounding us, expecting them at any minute to “yank us out of the ambulance” and kill us, but all of a sudden, every face outside lit up and they all gave us a smile and a “thumbs up.” We drove away so fast, running over rocks and debris! What a miracle!
Today, if you feel like you are wading through high waters, Jesus is there! When the rivers are rising, they will NOT overflow you, and when you walk through the fire, it will NOT kindle upon you! Those are just “circumstances” that make you realize what a “big God we serve!” Sherry
