Word from the Mission Field

“Inviting a Guest for Dinner.”

Years ago, here in Haiti, Bobby and I were invited to a party by some of our friends. It was during a “New Year’s Celebration.” I really thought I would enjoy it but there were a lot of rich people there, and we knew none of them. They did not seem to want to talk to “a couple of missionaries,” anyway. I was really glad to get home.

After we had been in Haiti for a few more years, we began to go into the poorest areas of Haiti, bringing the mothers a large box of food and feeding all the children in the area a “big hot plate of food.” The children had on their “best clothes,” which were used, torn, and some clothes were too large for the children. Other children had “slightly dirty clothes,” because it was all they had. I watched each child put a spoonful of food into their mouth, and I watched them eat “every grain of rice,” and then, run their fingers around the rim of the bowl to get every taste that was still “sticking to bowls.” It was really hard for me not to burst into tears.

Jesus said, “When thou make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind. And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee; for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection for the just.” Luke 14:13–14

That’s why “you” are reading this scripture. You have a heart for the poor and God’s hand is upon your life.
