Word from the Mission Field

“In the presence of mine enemies…”

Psalms 23 is one of the most widely read in the Bible. King David knew what “enemies” really were… King Saul, whom David loved as a father, was 100% devoted to and fought battles for, turned against David simply because of jealousy. Jealousy will make your friends “become your enemies.” Bobby and I have lived in Haiti for 27 years. Our greatest enemies have been those that we loved and those that we have tried to help. Enemies can come at any age and for any reason.

“Feeding hungry people in Haiti” can be very dangerous and sad to say, Haiti is in the worst “food crisis” it has ever faced. We feed many villages in many areas, but some of our greatest enemies have caused us problems in our own area. These were young men with no jobs, and extremely frustrated with “no jobs and no income.” Many times, they came to our front gate and threatened our lives, and they have done many other mean things to us. They would stop our vehicles as we tried to go to other areas, demanding food and money. They had made “delivering food” very dangerous.

Once, when Bobby was not with me, Kaeli (our young missionary) and I decided to do a food distribution right down the road from Love A Child. We had our drivers take the truck full of food, and we followed in our Land Cruiser. All of a sudden, while we were waiting to distribute the food, a couple of guys jumped on the hood of our truck. One had a gun, and another one had rocks in his hands getting ready to throw them through our window! A Haitian pastor jumped on the back of one them, and I “put the pedal to the metal” and sped off, nearly running over a couple of them! The next day, we decided to invite the “ten meanest guys” for a talk. We brought them inside our Mobile Medical Clinic room, and I let my Rottweiler, “Sampson,” follow them in! (smile) I told them “to talk nice” and not to raise their voice because he would “go straight for their throats!” They talked “very calmly.” They explained that they did not receive food, but that they needed some, and that they had no job… they were just frustrated and angry!

We decided to “hire them” as our “Food Security Guards.” Now, they get food, a salary, and tips! They are happy and we are happy! God can give you wisdom and favor “in the presence of your enemies!” I am a “living” testimony! Read Psalms 23 and “give it up to Jesus!” Sherry
