“Broken Focus…” Matthew 14:29

What a brave man Peter was… he was in the boat with the disciples and the storm came in. It must have been terrifying! It was pitch black and the giant waves were crashing the boat, which was “in the midst of the sea.” The “Sea of Galilee” lies low, 600 feet below the level of the Mediterranean. The winds from the mountains are severe, and when these two combine it creates great storms. But Jesus comes “walking on the water to them.” This scares them to death, even more than the storm. But Jesus said, “It is I. Be not afraid.” Peter had that “reckless faith” and said, “Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.” (Let’s make sure this is Jesus!) The Lord says, “Come.” And Peter jumped out of the boat and began walking on the water… not the calm water, but the “boisterous, windy, wave-crashing, boat-sinking water.” And as long as his eyes met the eyes of Jesus, he “walked on the water.” But for a moment, he took his eyes off of Jesus, the Master of the Sea, and focused on the storm… and he began to sink. All of us go through storms… physical storms, emotional storms, financial storms, storms in raising our children… but in the midst of the darkness and the hurricane winds, Jesus is still “walking to us on the water” saying, “Don’t be afraid. Keep your eyes on me.”

We only “sink” when we have “broken focus.” So, keep your eyes on Jesus, no matter what you are going through! Blessings, Sherry
