Word from the Mission Field

“An expected end” or we might say, “God has something better in mind!”

Have you ever had something “bad” happen to you? Maybe you lost a really great job you loved or maybe even lost a fiancée! Perhaps you were comfortable, and “everything was just going fine,” and then all of a sudden, “boom!” You were met “face-to-face” with a disaster! Bobby and I know exactly how you felt… Before we moved to Haiti, we had been doing evangelism ministry in the States for many years. We started out on “street corners,” but gradually we got enough money to buy a gospel tent. Oh, how Bobby loved preaching under that tent… The big Hammond organ, the smell of the sawdust or dirt on the ground, people coming in so excited… The wonderful praise and worship! It was like “Heaven on Earth!” Bobby then decided to get a bigger tent, and of course, he couldn’t wait to have services in it. However, before all of this, we had started working in Haiti, going back and forth, but Bobby never wanted to “move there.” He said, “Honey, everyone is coming to the States on a boat! What does that tell you?” I decided not to ask him again, but I told God, “If you want us in Haiti, you have to speak to Bobby.”

Bobby had put his big tent up, and he had a great tent man named, “Pops!” Pops used to work for a circus, so he knew tents “in and out!” The day was beautiful… Not a cloud in the sky. We came by to say “hi” to Pops, and I think we told him we’d bring him a cup of coffee and something to eat, but in just a short time something happened. We drove up to see the ambulance taking Pops to the hospital and the tent was gone! The tent poles were down, and the tent was ripped to shreds… The chairs and the organ were out on the street. Everything was broken and soaking wet! “Some kind of great wind,” or whatever it was, destroyed the tent in a matter of minutes! (Thankfully, Pops was okay… Just a small cut on his head.) Bobby was broken-hearted, devastated, and in shock!

Why did God let that happen? Well, to tell you the truth, that’s the only way God could get us to move to Haiti… He took the tent! Taking the tent was the first step that led us to move to Haiti where God wanted us!!! The Lord says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end!” (Jeremiah 29:11) In other words, to make things come out better for you than you ever imagined! So, when something bad happens, always know that “something good” is right behind it coming your way! Sherry
