“No man, having put his hands to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62
“Elisha” means “God is salvation.” Elisha had a yoke of oxen, and was ploughing in a field with others. His was one of the twelve “yokes of oxen.” He was doing what he was supposed to be doing until Elijah, the prophet, saw him and threw his “mantle” on Elisha. Elisha went and kissed his father and mother goodbye, and then “slaughtered his oxen, burned the wood (the equipment for the oxen), gave the meat to the people, and followed Elijah. He never looked back.
What Jesus said was a tough thing…”no man having put his hands to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.” Never look back. Lot’s wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt! Once God calls us to do something (no matter how big or how small it is), we cannot look back. Elisha didn’t look back; in fact, “he burned his bridges behind him,” his oxen and all the wood, and went and followed Elijah!
This may be why there are not many missionaries on the field anymore… It may be why there are not a lot of people fulfilling the calling of God on their lives. So “never look back.” Bobby says, “When you’re driving, don’t keep looking in the rearview mirror.” Keep your eyes on the road ahead! Sherry
