Word from the Mission Field

It is probably the “most preached about” story in the Bible…David and Goliath. David was the shepherd boy, tending his father’s sheep, while his big brothers were warriors, constantly at war with the Philistines. However, when Goliath, the “Philistine Champion,” came out to meet the Israeli soldiers, he was a terrifying giant!  He was over 9 feet tall, mean, and carried a spear 12.7 feet long, weighing over 33 pounds…all this, not to mention his shield. His helmet covered his face with one little space left open between his eyes. His height alone frightened all of the armies of God’s people.

Little David, a young, skinny teenager, quickly took Goliath down with one rapid twirling rock, released from his “handmade sling.” (Bible scholars say it had the force of a .44 Magnum slug! Wow!) David won the battle against the giant, and went on to win wars, and had favor with God.

You too, have faced a “giant” in your life. It could be “cancer,” or “a divorce,” or “a boss who threatened you on your job,” a “court battle,” etc.  With God’s help, we have all “fought the giant.” That seems like the end of the story until you come to 2 Samuel 21:19.

“And there was again a battle in Gob, with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim,  a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath, the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.”  And that’s not all… “These four (giants) were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.” 2 Samuel 21:22

We are happy when we slay the “giant”…but we get discouraged when we find out that “the giant has brothers!” There are more giants to fight! It has happened to Bobby and me. We fought a “giant” many years ago in Haiti, and when we “cut off his head,” we thought we were finished…until we realized there were more giants to fight! And the “big one’s coming!”

The great part of this story is that “God is a giant-killer!” He has helped you fight one giant, and He knows more are coming, but His “sling” is still loaded with miracles! Do not fear!!!
