Word from the Mission Field

“Our Guide ‘til the End…”

Unless you have never “been lost,” you will never realize what it means to “be found.” “When you lose your guide (especially in a foreign country), it can be a great fear.

Years ago, I was asked to go and visit a Haitian worker in one of our mountain churches in the village of Demesseau. He was very sick and could not make it to the doctor. I asked our driver to take me up there, hours away, over steep and rugged mountains. He had to drop me off near a mountain because our truck could not make it any further.

The Haitian Pastor met me and walked me in. After I visited the elderly man (a deacon in his church) and gave him some medicine, I had to “walk back to my truck and meet my driver.”

The Pastor said, “Let’s take a shortcut.” We had not lived in Haiti long, and I did not realize what the term “short cut” really meant. The Pastor took off walking, and I followed. He went up steep mountains and walked so fast I could not keep up with him! He suddenly left me as he was climbing up a high mountain…so I tried to follow.

The mountain was “straight up!” As I walked up, it was so steep I had to get down and crawl on my belly, to try to make it up to the top! I had no water and was on my stomach crawling “up” and grasping at pieces of grass…I thought, “I can’t make it up. Bobby doesn’t even know where I am! I think I’ll try to go back down!” But, as I looked back over my shoulder, I almost gave up! There was no way I could go back down!

I prayed and asked God to help me…to be my guide! I finally made it to the top of the mountain, my legs were shaking, and I was so weak and without water. In the distance, I saw my truck waiting for me!! I did not see the Pastor anymore. My “guide” had left me and almost cost me my life!

The Bible says in Psalms 48:14, “For this God is our God forever and ever; He will be our guide unto death.”  That means, “He will be our guide ‘til the end! He will never leave us!”

Today, if you are discouraged and can’t seem to “find your way, ” your GUIDE is still there!

Have a blessed day!

Sherry
