Word from the Mission Field

Word from the Mission Field

“Those who share their food, never eat alone.” A Haitian Creole proverb.

“Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure pressed down and shaken together and running over shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure ye mete withal, it shall be measured unto you.” Luke 6:38

We have come to realize that “cheap people” never get blessed. In the last thirty years of living in Haiti, we have had pastors, evangelists, team members, and others who come and stayed with us for some time. There have been people who have given and given, and blessed and blessed people, and they have done it without anyone asking. Blessings always seem to follow those people and still do, and I could name one person, in particular. He is always happy, smiling, and always, always giving… because “he lives to give!” In Haiti, when you buy beans or rice, or grains on the street, they measure it out in a large can called a “marmit” (pronounced Mar-meet). When they pour the rice or sugar or beans, into the large can, they “pile it up” on top! They give you “good measure” running over.

But in the same way, we have seen so many “tight, stingy Christians,” who have been around the poor. They see the mothers who struggle to feed their children and yet, they never offer to buy a sack of rice for them. These same people, when eating in a restaurant with others, will never offer to pay for someone else’s meal. They will stay “stingy” all their life and the blessings that God wanted to pour out on them, He cannot because they have broken the “law of giving!” They are the ones who always murmur and complain.

When we “feed the poor,” God will always make sure there is food on our table. The Haitians have a Creole proverb that says, “Those who share their food, never eat alone.” It simply means, that they share their food with someone who is hungry, someone will share food with them, when they are hungry. Yes, “Give and it shall be given unto you!” Have a great day and don’t be a “stingy Christian.” Be looking around for someone to bless!
