Word from the Mission Field

“The Hand Wide Open.”

When you were a child, do you remember someone asking you to guess which hand had the coin in it? They would squeeze their hands so tight you could never tell which hand, was the “good one.” When the children of Israel came forth after many years, into the land of promise, the Lord God, like a loving Father, would give them life lessons. I like this one…

“If there be among you a poor man of one thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: But thou shalt open wide thine hand unto him and shalt surely lend him (which meant “give him”) sufficient for his need in that which he wanteth.” Deuteronomy 15:7-8

God does not want His children to be stingy! There’s nothing worse than a stingy Christian. And the thing about giving is that you can get to the place “where you want to give.” I was in McDonald’s a couple of months ago. Bobby and I had come back from Haiti to take care of some business. We were wanting to get a hamburger and something to drink. They were so short of help. It took a long time for me to get my order and the young man at the cash register was kind, but he was frustrated. I knew he was working hard, and not making much money. As I stood there patiently, I finally got my food and walked over and told him “he was doing a good job,” and I put a $20 bill in his hand, because I felt that God wanted me to do that. He stood there so shocked! I just smiled and told him that “better things were coming his way.” Maybe that $20 did not solve all his problems, but it sure did encourage him to have a better day.

Listen “with your heart” as you go about your daily chores… at the grocery store, the gas station, wherever, and “listen with your heart.” God will move on someone else or in some way, to “bless you back,” 100 fold. “Open Wide Thine Hand… the Lord God.” Have a good day.
