“Accustomed to Being Bound…”
I don’t believe any one of us could ever appreciate the great burden Moses had of leading the children of Israel out of Egypt. God had spoken to Abraham (Abram) and told him that the children of Israel, the seed of Abraham, would be in bondage for 400 years.
To be bound by anything, anyone is horrible. Just think, they had no “mind” to think or do for themselves. They were beaten, the women abused, they are killed and tortured… they “belonged to the Egyptians.” They knew nothing else. They knew nothing of the outside world. They had no life… they had to work hard all day long, day after day, building things for Pharaoh. Their “minds” were in bondage.
So, when Moses came to “set them free,” they were all fearful. Even after God had shown Pharaoh ten signs, and even after the Red Sea swallowed up the Egyptians, every time they had a problem, they murmured and complained… “Oh, that we were back in Egypt.” “We want to go back to Egypt,” blah, blah, blah. All they did was murmur and complain. They were “free,” and yet, they were still in “bondage” in their minds!
In the circus, they used to tie a metal collar to the leg of a huge elephant and tie this to a small wooden peg. This huge, gigantic 10 foot tall, 5,000-pound elephant could easily snap the chain and breakaway, but it won’t.
From a baby, the little elephant has had a metal collar and chain on his leg… it was tied to a wooden peg. But when he tried to escape, the metal collar cut into his skin. All his life, he has been in bondage, but now, he is big enough to snap the chain, but… he won’t. His mind still tells him he is in bondage, and he believes it.
Today, you may be in bondage to drugs, alcohol, to your husband, to your job, to evil spirits… but the battle is in your mind. You still think you are small, and the metal collar is still around your foot… you cannot break away. You live in fear, but the Bible says, “And they shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free…” John 8:36
There’s nothing like “freedom!” Have a great day! Sherry
