“A Sad Lesson to Learn…”
“Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.” Proverbs 21:13 – When we first moved to Haiti, we lived up in the mountains and had some poor neighbors around the corner. Each night, we would hear a baby cry. It was almost annoying and I thought, “I wish that mother could find out why her baby is crying and do something about it.” This went on for weeks, and then, I did not hear the cry again. I thought, “Maybe the mother figured out it was a stomach ache.” When the poor lady passed by our house one day, I went to talk to her. She was dressed in rags, and she was so sad. I said, “I heard your baby crying every night, was he sick?” “No,” said the mother, and she bowed her head. “He was hungry, and he cried himself to sleep, and now, he is dead. He will not be hungry again.” I cannot tell you what that did to my heart. I could not hear “the cry of the poor.” I have asked the Lord to open my eyes and my ears so that I would never turn away a real need again. It was a sad lesson to learn. Today, open your eyes and your ears to the “cry of the poor,” and be a blessing. God will bless you 100-fold! Sherry
