The Story of Madamn Eveline

Note: Our Birthing Center is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we never close! We want to thank all our workers, our midwives, doctors, cleaners, those who prepare the food, and those who pray for the mothers and babies. Because of your faithful work, lives are being saved and mothers can have a clean, safe way to have their baby. Here is a touching story, one of many we see each day.

The Story of Madamn Eveline.

Our Birthing Center is saving lives each day!! At the age of 42, Eveline Myrvil is the mother of seven children. She lives with a man who doesn’t care about the children at all. They live in an area called Thomazeau, where there are many gangs. Therefore, getting to a hospital for medical care, or to have a baby, is out of the question, so they do their best and give birth at home, which is dangerous.

Madamn Eveline is a hard-working woman who sells bread. This is the way she sustains her family. She believes in God and trusts Him to take care of her and her children because her husband will not. She has had two abortions, and when she came to our clinic, she was pregnant with another child. Upset, she was determined to have another abortion. Our nurses and others talked to her and told her abortion was not the right thing and that she should try to keep the baby. Our nurses told her she should come to our Birthing Center and have regular check-ups because of her age and the number of children she has had, and the fact that “having the baby at home” was not safe.

They also gave her a talk about birth control! Birth control in Haiti is not easy for the women to understand, especially poor women with no education. It is customary to have a lot of children because “some might die” and the ones that live will take care of the parents. Also, the men put pressure on their wives because they, themselves, are uneducated and the “number of children” proves that they are a “real man.” The health of women is not important to them, and in Haitian culture, “you should have many children because some will die and the ones that will live, will take care of you in your old age!” All grown Haitian children who have a job are expected to take care of their parents and siblings.

Madamn Eveline was so determined to take care of this baby that she traveled many miles on foot and on motorbike to come to her monthly appointments. This was very important, because if she died, she would leave behind “seven orphan children.” Madamn Eveline gave birth to a beautiful baby boy! You can see the expression of joy on her face! God must have a “special plan” for this baby!!! Thank you, those of you who help sponsor our Birthing Center!!! God bless you! Sherry
