“Someone’s Watching You”
My favorite missionary story while living in Haiti was the conversion of the witch doctor, Joel Estime. He was the biggest, meanest witch doctor you have ever seen. We first met him when I asked to use his hut for a small Mobile Medical Clinic. The story is long, but here’s the shortened version… One day, he fell on his knees in the yard, in the mud, near where he used to live. (Someone had come in and burned down his hut and the entire village. We brought them all food and gave them money to rebuild their huts.) On this day, Joel dropped to his knees, cried like a baby, and said, “Madamn Sherry, I want to become a citizen of your country!” I said, “Joel, I’m not taking you to the States.” He said, “I don’t want to go to the States. I want to go to Heaven! I have been watching your lives from a distance for a long time!”
“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1)
Someone is always watching you!
