A fundamental focus for us in our “development for sustainability” outreaches is to involve the youth in learning to appreciate what they can provide for themselves if they have the willingness to work, learn, and seek better outcomes. We like to work with the youth in the children’s home and in the community to show them how they can take responsibility for their own outcomes by learning methods of sustainable gardening at an early age.
We show them through the large harvests at our successful demonstration gardens at the Agricultural Training Center (ATC) and the large Vergé garden near the children’s home, and we teach our ATC students sustainable methods today so they can have a better tomorrow. Sustainability restores dignity, allowing one to think differently about their circumstances, not as a victim who must rely on handouts from others but as someone who has the ability to take control of their own life and outcomes. To help Haiti become more self-sustainable, we start with the individual, then expand to the community, and then hopefully on to the entire nation.
When you support our “sustainability programs,” you are helping to transform a nation one individual at a time. Thank you for your gifts today, so others may have a better future.
