I never understood this Creole Proverb until we moved to Haiti. We had made many trips for years, going back and forth to Haiti, until one day, God told us to move to Haiti. Since then, we have seen the strength and resilience in the Haitian people and their children. Adults who face horrible situations each day, trying to find food for their families… they always try to put on a brave face. But the children especially, who are so sweet, even though they are hungry, will try to find joy in the smallest of things, even though they have never had a toy, a doll, or a truck. Sometimes, when visiting an extremely poor village, we will see little children sitting in front of a mud hut, laughing and giggling only to find out they haven’t eaten yet today.
