Thanks to all of you who have been sending in “Birthing Kits” for poor “mothers-to-be,” who live in isolated areas of Haiti. These Birthing Kits are given to the mothers when they are in their last month. They must come to the “well mothers” check ups at our clinic in order to get one.

We always need lots of “Birthing Kits.” This is a great project for a Sunday school class or other church project. Please make sure your Birthing Kits contain each item listed below.

Birthing Kits:
(Please send items inside a pillowcase.)

• One newborn outfit (a “onesie” and stocking hat)
• Feminine pads and two receiving blankets
• Small plastic basin and a bar of soap
• Single-edged razor blade
• Two 10” long pieces 1/16” cotton cord
• Disposable newborn diapers and one cloth diaper
• Absorbent under pads
• Baby shampoo

If everyone sends in different things, we have to open all the kits and add or subtract things that should be included and take things out that should not be in the kits. Some people send nice things, but forget the sanitary pads and diapers and some people add things, such as used clothing, etc.

PLEASE ONLY PUT INSIDE THE PILLOWCASE THE THINGS ON THIS LIST. These Birthing Kits are so, so valuable. Imagine a poor mother in a mud-hut, giving birth and the only thing to cut the umbilical cord is a “rusty razor,” or “tin can lid!” This is why so many mothers die in childbirth or right after. Please make sure everything on this list is inside the kit, or it cannot be considered a “Birthing Kit.” It is better to send “ten” good Birthing Kits, than to send 20, which do not have the right items inside.

We are so, so thankful for those of you who sent these kits to Haiti. Please realize that you may be “saving the life of a poor mother,” with these items!!!
