This is Daniel, the twin of Daniella. He and his sister had another sibling born at the same time, but their mother died along with the baby. It was during the time when Haiti was again facing political problems, and men with guns were in the streets. When their mother went to the General Hospital, the men with guns blocked the hospital and told everyone to leave. Daniel’s mother went home to her little humble place and delivered two babies, and then she died.

Their uncle brought both children to us. Daniel was so much smaller than his sister and always “sickly.” He was so tiny that we did not think he would live. We never knew as he grew up with health problems that his eyes were affected as well. We sent Daniel to have his eyes checked and they gave him glasses, but he still could not see. He failed two grades, which is unbelievable because he always studies!

A week ago, I found another eye doctor in downtown Port-au-Prince. She said that he has a serious eye infection and that he has had it since he was born! He can barely see out of one of his eyes. We will keep him close and always be watchful of any changes. We don’t even have a diagnosis for what kind of problem he has! It is really hard to get a “diagnosis” on paper, but it can be done.

Daniel is quiet, hardworking, and wants to please. He deeply loves his sister, Daniella. They are “closer than twins!” Daniel wants to be a mechanic, but I think that will change. I just can’t see him getting his hands dirty. Daniel is really a sweet kid, very respectful! We love him!
