Feeding the Hungry

It has been such a wonderful day. Feeding the hungry is the greatest joy we have here in Haiti. It makes all of our problems and all of the tough times here seem so small.

This morning we went across the lake, near the border of the Dominican Republic, to a place called Por Ploom. There were 1,500 families represented in that village. Another village, Po Glasy, came to “Por Ploom,” so that we could feed the two villages together!! With us were some of our workers, some local security, and our new missionaries, Doug and Jessica Lackey. This trip reminded me of all the trips we made years ago when went to La Gonâve Island because the fishermen were “bailing water out of the boat” on the way over!!

Getting in and out of the boat was a job. They pulled me and twisted me, and one guy threw me up on his back and dumped me into the big boat! The others were smart enough to “wade through water!” The people and little children were waiting anxiously for us because they rarely have “visitors.” The boatmen helped us out of the boat (I decided to wade through the water this time.) and when we arrived, there were so many people and children waiting for food!!! We gave each family “five bundles of food, which had rice, beans, and cooking oil” in each of them. Plus, each bundle included a HUGE FISH from the Taino Fish Company. (We bought these through Farmer John and got a discount!) The Taino Fish Company grows big Tilapia fish in huge fish cages in the lake. The local men on the island do catch fish, but they are not big… They are just tiny, tiny fish. They also make a living by “cutting down trees and making charcoal.” There is no other way to make a living.

Looking around the village, all I saw were small mud huts with tin roofs… No trees. There was a small church with “half of a roof,” and a very sweet pastor, Pastor Anthony. We gave out 1,500 tickets to this village and 500 to the visiting village, a total of 2,000 families. Friday, we will give food to the third village, which is much smaller, called Fond Dieu with 300 families.

We want to thank each of you who sacrificed and gave with all of your hearts to help us buy this food in the Dominican Republic. The people and children of Haiti are so hungry, and they have suffered so much in this “street war” they are caught in. Many of you gave more and many gave the “widow’s mite,” but each gift meant food! It meant so much more… It meant that these people “were not forgotten,” and that God had sent “you” to answer their prayers. We love you all so much! Thank you, Bobby and Sherry
