Fighting for Life in a “Gang Infested” Country…

Since the day we first opened our Birthing Center, we have helped save the lives of many mothers and their babies. Our maternity staff works day and night. Last night, five little babies came into the world, in a country where gunfire, roadblocks, and threats are a reality! Since the dedication of our Birthing Center, we have had the goal of saving lives, especially during these stressful times here in Haiti. We receive future mothers in a wonderful, quiet, and peaceful atmosphere, with Christian music playing and rocking chairs on the front porch. (For the nervous husbands.) Pregnant women receive consultations, examinations, ultrasounds, medication, and an ambulance if they need it.

Some women are so poor, they do not have the means to feed themselves or to feed their families properly. We don’t want them to worry about a big hospital bill, or anything else. The stress that they live with here in Haiti, and avoiding the gangs, is enough stress for anyone. We just had two baby girls and three baby boys born last night. (All these mothers kept all of their appointments with our doctors, which is a blessing!)

However, Kethia (the lady dressed in the red dress) lives in Croix-des-Bouquets, a locality where the gangs have taken over. In this location, the people do not have the right to move or go out freely. Along the way, Kethia had contractions coming on. She was fearful because she was in gang territory. She had left her house for one night to take refuge in another locality.

She began to give birth in a truck and as the truck arrived at our door, our Midwives hurried and hastened to her because her baby’s life was in danger. She gave birth to a baby girl weighing 2.9 Kilograms. She had no clothes for herself or the baby, but fortunately, we have Birthing Kits with clothes, towels, baby diapers, baby outfits, etc. This Birthing Kit came from Sue North.

Madamn Kethia and the other mothers went home with their babies and their “baby gifts,” after having their deliveries in the most beautiful maternity clinic in Haiti! God is a good God! He loves the poor and He uses people “like you!” God bless you, partners, and may all of Heaven bless you!
