Fighting the Virus

At 4:30 a.m., Bobby and I were laughing our heads off! Since school has been out here in Haiti, all of our kids at our Love A Child Children’s Home have jobs to do every day to help stop the virus. They clean and disinfect the rooms, the bathrooms, all of the railings, anything metal, kitchen appliances, etc. It is a “big job,” but some of the “older boys” decided they would rather sleep in and let their younger brothers work! That didn’t fly with me!

I just received this new megaphone, which I use for Mobile Medical Clinics, so I decided that it would be good to get the older boys up. “Camey” is a young Haitian man who is tough, strong, and sweet, but is also “no nonsense!” He is over the “older boys!” I gave Camey the megaphone, and after careful instructions, showed him the “volume button” and the three other buttons… 1. Whistle 2. Talk 3. Siren. I said, “Just put the volume on low and press ‘TALK!'” Yesterday morning, “early,” we heard an “ambulance” coming to our Love A Child Children’s Home!” Bobby and I ran out to see who was sick, thinking it was a child or worker! Our hearts were beating, and all we could see was this dim figure, “Camey,” with the bullhorn on full blast saying, “It’s time to get up and clean!” We laughed so hard! I told Bobby, “I need to give him another lesson!”

Yesterday, I could smell disinfectant on everything, and all of the older boys were working hard!! I told Bobby, “Well, maybe I can teach Camey to put the button on ‘talk’ and pull the volume down!” It was early in the morning again, and we just jumped up to hear the “siren” go off! I had forgotten to tell Camey! He was standing there in the low light, proud as could be! He said, “The boys are doing (bon travay) “good work!” That’s life in Haiti! Sherry
