From the Garbage Dump to the Garden

From the Garbage Dump to the Garden

Meet Mr. Vela. We first met him, his wife, and daughters, as they were trying to survive, living inside the garbage dump in Truttier, Haiti. They had moved there to escape the extreme violence of “Cité Soleil,” but it turns out they went “from bad to worse.”

They managed to make a “shack” with boards and pieces of tarp. Each day, Mr. Vela would have to dig through the garbage with his bare hands, to try to find food, or things to sell, so he could buy food for his family. The day we came and met them, his wife showed us a bucket of raw, filthy, spoiled meat that she would have to prepare for their supper that day. We all cried with her, as she told her story.

But soon, God provided them a house in Miracle Village and also a job for Mr. Vela. Now, instead of digging through trash, he is working in our Agricultural Projects, growing vegetables in God’s soil, making a wonderful living. He has gone from the “garbage dump” to the “garden,” and is now proudly providing “food for life!” You can see the happiness and dignity he now has in these pictures of him harvesting and sharing the results of his transforming work.

He is just one of our many success stories and he is quick to give all the Glory to God for saving his family from their former life in the “garbage dump”.
