Importance of the Birthing Center

Why our Birthing Center is so important…

Many people have asked us why we built our Birthing Center. Most of the children from our Love A Child Orphanage, which is now known as the Love A Child Children’s Home, have come to us because their mothers died during childbirth or soon after. This little sweetie, Rodna, is just one of the many children who have lost their mothers as a baby. Her father had to borrow money for her mother’s funeral. He had other children to feed and couldn’t afford to keep Rodna, so he brought her to us. There is much more to this sad story, but the fact is that many mothers in Haiti have poor health, and if they don’t have a decent place to have their baby, they will die during childbirth or soon after. This is why “orphanages are overcrowded,” and this is one reason why we built the Birthing Center.

Inside the Birthing Center, we also have a Women’s Health and Teaching Center that the mothers attend each morning. We teach about health and provide birth control. Women’s poor health is a major problem in Haiti. They are most often anemic, frail, and have to work very hard, even when they are pregnant. The babies are born in mud huts on a dirt floor, and then infection sets in. All of the money goes for “food,” and the mothers rarely have money for a doctor.

We love little Rodna and all of the children that God has sent us, but each child “needs a mother.” Our Birthing Center is open 24/7 and we are so grateful every day for our partners who made this possible!
