Joseph…From Malnutrition to Mechanic

When Joseph and Sarah were born, their mother and father lived far in the mountains. Their mother died when they were about two years old. Both had severe kwashiorkor malnutrition and were very sad. We took Joseph and Sarah into our orphanage. Joseph likes to play soccer and work! He wants to be a mechanic. He is always very helpful and obedient. Right now, between schoolwork, Joseph works as one of our painters. He is very careful, and like Jean Edwouard, he never spills a drop! Joseph is honest, loves God, and is not a problem at all! He likes to make people smile and laugh when they are having a hard time… What if we had said “no” to Joseph’s father? What if we had said, “we can’t afford to take in two more children?” I am sure that both he and his sister would have died from malnutrition.

This is another reason why our Birthing Center is so important. We teach the mothers about taking care of children and how to feed them when they have little or nothing. We teach the mothers that it is better to have “fewer children” than to have too many and have to bury them. Mothers who die in Haiti leave behind children “who will probably die.”

Haiti breaks our hearts every day, but God always shows us “what is at the end of our journey…wonderful children like Joseph and his sister Sarah!” We are so thankful to everyone who helps us care for these children. Thank you and God bless you.
