In Haiti, May 1st and 2nd are a big popular cultural holiday, “Labor and Agriculture Days,” where the country celebrates Haiti’s heritage as a labor and agriculturally based nation. It is a lot like our Earth Day and Arbor Day, where there is a heavy emphasis on appreciating the environment. It is symbolized by a lot of tree planting. Wilner and our ATC (Agricultural Training Center) staff have been planning and preparing for this celebration for months. They have prepared over 1,000 trees to be passed out to school children and others within the community to join in the celebration and plant a tree. Here you see many of the orphanage kids that Kaeli took over to Gwo Maché Mirak (Grand Miracle Market) in order to participate by planting trees. The children can watch their trees grow up, as they grow up, and be forever proud of their part in renewing Haiti’s environment during this celebration. Of course, they love having two days off from school too! Our ATC planned a big program for the area today, celebrating with displays of locally grown produce and a big celebration meal. It is a joyful time for Haitians to celebrate their heritage or their “roots” in agriculture. We give thanks to Wilner and the ATC staff for all of their work and preparation, and also to Kaeli for taking a huge bunch of the kids over to be a part of it.
