This week we have a special “chicken school” underway at our Poul Mirak Co-operatif (Miracle Chicken Co-op) in Fond Parisien. One of the founding objectives of the Poul Mirak chicken co-op was to teach others how to have a sustainable business with poultry in Haiti. We have two students from the Deschapelles area and two students from our Love A Child Children’s Home, all trying to learn how to raise chickens as a business.
The students learn theory in a “classroom” setting with Wilner and Stephanie and practical application by working with Willy in the Poul Mirak chicken houses. Yesterday they got an extra treat of visiting the chicken processing operation at Farmer John’s Love A Child slaughterhouse and followed up with business lessons from Stephanie. Farmer John operates our slaughterhouse and chicken processing plant and raises chickens for meat and eggs at Poul Mirak. His successful operations have added many skilled jobs and support many Haitian families with his sustainable businesses, operating as a great Christian mission, impacting many lives for Christ.
This morning they continue to work at the chicken co-op houses with Willy and Wilner and more classroom sessions in the afternoon with Wilner and Stephanie. There are many, many people in Haiti now wanting to learn how to have a chicken business so we are very grateful for the faith and foresight of Mike Welch, Larry Guest, and the World Poultry Foundation for sponsoring the Poul Mirak chicken co-operative. It gives Haitians a chance to learn valuable skills, provide important animal protein in Haitian diets, and provide employment in an area with over 80% unemployment. What a blessing!
