“Almost Aborted…”
The women who come to our Birthing Center come for several reasons. One reason is that they don’t have to worry about paying and another reason is that it is the most beautiful Birthing Center in Haiti. Another reason is that we have some of the very best midwives, and doctors, that there are.
As the young Madamn Stelly came into the front of the Birthing Center, beautiful Christian music was playing and family friends, waiting for babies to come, sat in our rocking chairs, just “rockin’ away!” Despite the gangs on the street, it is an atmosphere of peace… far away from a “birth on a dirt floor” inside a mud hut.
Stelly is young and lives in Michaud, an area near Croix-des-Bouquets, an area far from us where many of the gangs are. Somehow, she managed to get here safely. Her husband does “small jobs” to survive. But, when Madamn Stelly found out she was pregnant, she wanted to “do an abortion.” (This is very dangerous in Haiti!) She said the reason she wanted an abortion was that she and her husband did not have the money to raise a child.
However, she decided to have her baby. She went through the delivery but was bleeding. She did not want the midwives to examine her because she was in too much pain. So, our staff decided to send her to a hospital. Still, she was young, and her parents refused to sign a paper to let us take her to a hospital, because, they said, “their only hope was our Birthing Center!” They would have to pay a lot of money to the hospital.”
Finally, after several hours of patience with her, she agreed to be stitched. Our doctor came in and nurses assisted, and soon she was able to go home.
She left happy with a beautiful baby boy weighing 3.2 kilos (about 7 pounds), and nice beautiful clothes and items for the baby, from one of our partners, Rosalind Gillenwater.
It was so touching and brought tears to our eyes to see this beautiful child in her arms… and just to think, “he was almost aborted.” But, God had a plan…
Thank you, partners, for your help in sponsoring our beautiful Birthing Center! God bless you all.
