There are two types of malnutrition… Kwashiorkor and Marasmus.
Marasmus is the type you see when you are looking at a baby or toddler that is nothing but skin and bone. They are “skeleton looking.” The other type of malnutrition is Kwashiorkor, which can fool someone. The baby or toddler can look “fat and chunky,” or have big legs, a big belly, and a moon-shaped face. This type of malnutrition will kill a child quickly.
Now, due to the rising cost of food and the fact that there are so many gangs in Haiti, mothers cannot sell items on the street to make money for food. And if they can, food is expensive. As a result, they may feed their baby flour and water, cornmeal, or whatever they can find. When you hold a child like this in your arms, your heart breaks into a million pieces because they are “miserable!” That is why God laid it on our hearts to build a Malnutrition Center.
We are thankful to Joyce Meyer Ministries/Hand of Hope for the funds to build the clinic, and they have also supplied the money towards the furnishings. We look forward to getting the items that are still outstanding and look forward to its opening! God bless you all! Sherry
