Children in Haiti are suffering more now than ever before. The UN has declared that Haiti’s children are on the verge of starvation. With crime rising, their parents cannot get to the market to sell; instead of getting there, they are often robbed, or beaten, or kidnapped by gangs, such as the Papaya Gang.
The Haitian “gourde” money system has risen all the way to 99 gourdes per dollar. This makes the price of staple food like rice, very hard to buy. We have had more “malnourished children” come to our clinic than ever before…
Haitian children love to work and they work hard. They get up early and gather sticks for a fire… a fire they might not need if their parents cannot find food for that day. They have to walk a long way to find water and if they have a five-gallon bucket it must be lifted from the ground onto their head and carried a long distance. There are “dirty clothes to wash,” if there is money for soap.
But when the choice is between food and medicine, food always comes first. Haitian children don’t mind working hard, walking long distances, or even going barefoot. They are so happy to have a little food to cook and they will never complain. We missionaries living here in Haiti face uncertain problems with security and political violence every day, but we all know that we must do what God calls us to do… feed and care for the hungry.
We ask for your prayers and support, and we say, “don’t give up on Haiti.” God has brought us through “political problems, hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes.” He can bring us through this too. We all just want to do what God wants us to do… help the poor and share God’s love. Thank you for your prayers and support, Bobby and Sherry
