Rosemene’s Story… Saving a Mother’s Life

Giving birth in Haiti can be very dangerous unless there is a professional midwife there, and many times, it might be too late for the mother or baby.

Years ago, I saw a mother give birth to a baby, on a dirt floor, in a mud hut! The mother had begun to bleed very heavily, and before I could stop her, the “local midwife” reached into the corner of the hut where there was a pile of “dirty rags.” She used these dirty rags to stop the bleeding. Her husband dug around and found a rusty razor blade to cut the cord! It scared me to death! It was a miracle that the mother did not die…

For the poor, giving birth in Haiti can mean death for the mother and baby unless they can pay to have their baby delivered in a clean “Birthing Center,” but the majority cannot afford this… They cannot even afford food!

Rosemene Elisme is a young mother of three children. One had died at three months old. Then, she lost another one. She became pregnant again and learned about our Birthing Center, which is free. A few days ago, she gave birth to a little baby boy.

When she was transferred to our recovery room, Rosemene began to pass a lot of blood and complained of dizziness. Quickly, our midwives took care of it. They gave her serum, gave her a massage, and a uterine check-up. They removed large clots of blood. After a short time, Rosemene was doing fine! After rest and some good food, we gave her baby clothing and blankets which our partners had sent to us!

You can look at the face of this poor mother, who now feels that “she is rich” because her baby lived!

Thank you, partners, and “praise the Lord!”
