Teaching Haitians to Grow Life-changing Food

Teaching Haitians to Grow Life-changing Food

Feed a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man how to fish, he eats for a lifetime. This ancient proverb was the impetus behind Love A Child’s sustainability outreach of the Agricultural Training Center.  A new “sustainable agriculture in Haiti” training class got underway this morning at our Agricultural Training Center (ATC) in Fond Parisien, Haiti.  We have 6 sponsored students who have come from various locations around Haiti; from north near Montrouis, to the south past Leogane. These students will live, study, and work together for the next three weeks, learning methods of sustainable gardening that work for the harsh conditions found throughout Haiti. They will learn how to make good soil where none exists; how to make compost and natural organic fertilizers and insecticides; and how to plant, tend, and harvest the best nutritious crops. They will learn how to make the best garden beds, provide heavy mulches to protect the soil while preserving scarce moisture, and alternate ways to irrigate the plants for the best harvest. Their new skills will be life-changing for them. They will be able to provide continuous, nutritious food for their families and communities, and even have surplus to take to market. They will be able to teach and demonstrate to others how to do the same things they will learn in this class. The organizations who sponsor these students and those Love A Child donors who gave toward scholarships for some of the students fully understand the importance of developing these skills in order to offer self-reliance, dignity, and a hope for a better tomorrow. This is helping Haitians learn to help themselves. This is providing food for a lifetime. God Bless them for caring about our neighbors so much!
