If you didn’t believe the last story, you won’t believe this one…
Yesterday afternoon, I got a call to come to my Mobile Clinic room. Our pastor, Pastor Luders, was waiting there with two precious little boys… Jefte Louis, age 10, and his brother, Peterson Louis, age 7. Pastor Luders lives near the parents of these two children. Their mother is a devout Christian and attends church at Love A Child with her children. (Not sure if their father is a Christian.)
There is a voodoo lady that lives near the Louis family and not far from Pastor Luders. All live here in Fond Parisien. The voodoo lady accused the Christian mother of these children as being a “lou-ga-wou.” (spelled loup-garou) A large majority of the Haitians believe in this voodoo spirit which can change into anything (a bird, a werewolf-looking creature, a cat, anything). The voodoo woman had a baby recently, whom people said was very sick with diarrhea and severe dehydration. The baby died and the voodoo mother accused Madamn Louis (a Christian) of turning into a cat and killing her baby! The mother got scared and left town and they put the boys’ father in prison. (In Haiti, if the police are looking for one parent and can’t find them, they can take the other parent, thinking that the guilty one will give themselves up to free their spouse.) Now, there was no one left with the children who were in our school at that time. So, our Pastor asked us to take them in to protect them until they can release their father or find their mother!
These two boys are so sweet and precious! Today, we are having someone come over from the Department of Social Services to record what is happening, and they will tell us what to do. We hope and pray that we can find out where the father was imprisoned and see if there is something we can do.
Haiti is a country bound by superstition and fear. Their only hope is Jesus! Sherry
