The Struggle for a Better Life

All throughout Haiti, there is an unbelievable amount of suffering. All of the hospitals are overcrowded and cannot accept patients. The increase of gunshot wounds and violence from gang members has taken over hospitals, and Haiti simply cannot keep up with it. When riots take place, most doctors at the government hospitals leave, which results in the patients not receiving care. The amount of suffering that the Haitians endure is indescribable. I do not want this post to be revolved around politics, nor do I want to lean in one direction or the other, I just want to simply share a story from a lady who came to our clinic last week.

Last week, there was a plane that flew into Haiti from Mexico that was full of Haitian deportees. This plane dropped them off and hoped that they had somewhere to go. The lady that came to our clinic told us that she had made it to Brazil, and then walked from Brazil to Mexico, and after that, she walked from Mexico to the U.S. border!!! SHE WALKED! This took months and as she said, she was literally risking her life. She said, “when you walk through the woods to reach a border, many people are killed, and you have no supplies to live off of.” When she arrived at the U.S. border, she was put on a plane and dropped back off in Haiti. Although she knew she might not make it to the U.S., it just shows what all she went through to “try” to get a better life for herself. Haitians are hard workers, and if their country was stable and they had jobs, they would make the best employees.
