Watch Where You’re Going, Georges!

What a fine young man Georges turned out to be. He was born during “Hurricane Georges.” Actually, when I had to go downtown to Port-au-Prince to buy medicines for my Mobile Medical Clinic, I always talked to the nice girl who waited on me. She asked if we had an orphanage and I told her “yes.” She said, “I know a lady who has a lot of kids and her husband isn’t taking care of her. She is pregnant and cannot feed another child. She said she would “leave the baby at the general hospital.” I talked to the woman and promised her we would take the baby…but she never made it to the hospital. Hurricane Georges struck and many villages were damaged. I hurried down to the little shack, which was still standing, by a miracle. She handed me the baby, and I named him “Georges.” Two years later, the mother had another baby, a girl. She named her “Stephanie,” and then died soon after. We took Stephanie in also.

George has his degree paper from Caterpillar here in Haiti. He has been driving backhoes, front-end loaders, and anything with wheels since he was 12! He gets a “little carried away” sometimes and bumps into things he should not bump into! (I’m going to have his eyes checked, ha.) Georges is a sweet young man. When he does something wrong, he is quick to say he is sorry.

(We’re a little like Allstate…accident forgiveness! Ha!) Sherry
