We Love Haitian Mothers

“Mother’s Day” in Haiti is usually the last Sunday in May. It is a big holiday celebrated in almost every church in Haiti. Special “honor” is given to the mothers. A “mother in Haiti” could be their real mother, grandmother, caregiver, or whoever has raised the child and cared for them. Mothers in Haiti work HARD to bring food to their families; in addition to the usual “household” chores like gathering water from the river, washing clothes, and selling in the market to get a little money for food. Poor mothers work “very hard.”

When they are sick, instead of going to a doctor, that little bit of money is used to buy food… prenatal care is rare for the majority of the population. That’s one reason why the Lord laid it upon our hearts to build the “Birthing Center.” It will not only save lives (the life of the mother or the baby) but in our “Women’s Training Center,” we can give education on “family planning” and provide what they will need. This takes a lot of wisdom and counseling, as their customs and beliefs are different than ours in the States.

We love the “Haitian mothers.” We had a big celebration at our church in Fond Parisien with gifts for the mothers. I would not be “serving the Lord in Haiti” if it had not been for my wonderful and God-fearing mother, who is now in “the arms of Jesus!”

“I love you, Mom!” Sherry
