“Who is My Neighbor?”

Do you ever wonder “what breaks the heart of God?”

This is Mayenda, a poor woman you have never heard of, she and her four children live in a “dismal” area of Haiti called, “Mon Deral.”

From the distance, it is hot, dry, dusty, and deserted. People live in “anything they can find.” There are some that have gathered sticks and made a “mud-and-stick” house…and others, like Mayenda, have gathered pieces of ripped tents and made a little home for their children. I cannot imagine anyone living in this dry area…and I cannot imagine anyone living in a ripped tent with four children. (You will notice that one of the children, has their little metal bowl, ready for food…but there was none.)

She tried to make a living any way she could…collecting sticks is hard work because there are no trees. She tries to carry items on her head for others, but they are in worse condition than she is.

Her children have never been to school.

None of them have ever slept on a bed.

None of them have ever had “three meals a day,” and many times, not even one meal a day. Water is so far away that the oldest boy has to walk a long way to get it. If they are sick, they stay sick. There is no money for a doctor or for medicines.

Many times, when her children are hungry, she goes and picks wild leaves, and makes “saltwater soup” for supper. They know nothing but “hunger.”

And the sad thing is, Jesus said, “They are our neighbor.”
