“But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?” 1 John 3:17 – When we first began to work in Haiti in the 70s, we had large crusades, but we felt “something was missing.” We would see little children on the streets, barefoot, hungry and bloated stomachs, but still we were not feeding the hungry. Then, one night during a large outdoor crusade, (like the one we had last night) a woman in the back held her little baby high above her head. Her baby was severely malnourished with red hair and a bloated belly. She yelled out in Creole, “If God is so good, why is my baby so hungry?” This was the “line in the sand” for us, we had to do more. Saint Thomas Aquinas said, “He who is dying of hunger must be fed rather than taught.” From that day, we began to feed hungry children in the mountains, in the dry areas, in the garbage dumps and anywhere we can here in Haiti.
