“Burning the Candle.”
“No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.” Luke 11:33 —When we first moved to Haiti in 1991, it was rough because we went through a “Coup d’etat.” We had “very little” or practically no electricity for years. We would hear people with guns, and our house was dark and we were so afraid. All we had were candles… no TV, no electricity, just candles. We lit candles for every room in the house and always put the candles “higher up” on a mantle so they would give more light. We got so accustomed to candlelight and it was wonderful “not being in the dark.” Jesus likens our lives to those candles. He wants us to “make sure we burn the candles and hold them high” so that everyone can see the “light of Jesus.” When we walk into a room, there should be “something different about us.” We have the peace of God and His blessings. Others should be attracted to our light, and if not, something is wrong. Christ’s presence in us “illuminates peace.” Today, “light your candle in this world of utter darkness,” and put it “high up on a candlestick” so that everyone can see. You may be the “only Bible” they ever read! Sherry
