“Who Gets the Short Straw?”

Since Bobby and I have moved to Haiti, we have had years of “near death” episodes. In 1996, Bobby was diagnosed with Stage Three Melanoma Cancer and given only a short time to live. God healed him! We lived three years (1991-1994) with no electricity, and there were violent crimes here in Haiti when President Aristide was ousted. It was a dangerous time, and once, Bobby was shot at in Pétion-Ville, and the bullet just missed him!

Our vehicles have “almost gone over the mountains of Haiti” several times. Once when I was driving to the mountains with my interpreter, the back wheels of my Isuzu Trooper went off the side of the mountain, but instantly, a group of Haitian men pushed me back up and disappeared! Several years ago, Bobby was run over by his own bush-hog, and crushed, and evacuated out of Haiti. He was evacuated out and taken to a hospital in Louisiana. After two weeks, he was walking and recovering!!! He fell and broke his back and was evacuated once again to the States. I have broken my back twice and had to be flown to Miami. We have met “thugs” face to face during our “food distributions,” and these were guys with guns, rocks, and burning tires. Once, Bobby’s truck almost slid off the side of the mountain, when he and Pastor Mark were on their way to the mountains of Greffin. I always think about that scripture that says, “For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” Psalm 91:11 – I can almost hear the angels say, “Let’s draw straws to see who watches over the Burnettes today… short straw gets them!” It must be a full-time job just to keep us “alive and out of trouble,” but what a Great and Mighty God we serve. We get a full-time security force of angels, and so do you! So, we don’t care “who gets the short straw,” as long as God has our back! Sherry
