Word from the Mission Field

“I know what I’m doing, Lord!”

Have you ever thought that?

What a great story there is in the Bible with Joshua chapters 8 and 9! We told a story a few days ago about how Joshua, the great leader, had gotten his “tail whipped” by King Ai. The reason behind this was that Joshua did not ask the wisdom of the Lord in the first place! So, he only chose “3,000 men” to fight against Ai and got his “tail beat!” You know the rest of the story, as Joshua cried and repented, and God helped him win the next battle against Ai!

There were at least seven major “enemy” countries that had heard of how Joshua and the Israelites had won the battle against King Ai (Joshua 9:1). They knew already that Joshua would win any battle. One country, Gibeon, knew they were in trouble. So, they sent men out disguised as if they were from a far country… They wore old ripped clothes, brought moldy bread and wine in old dirty bottles, and had sandals that were falling off their feet. They told Joshua a lie. They said they were from a “far country,” and wanted to make peace. Joshua looked at the “moldy bread…”

“And the men took of their victuals (bread), and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.” Joshua 9:14

Instead of “inquiring of the Lord” (like some of us), they choose to believe the men “from the far country.” They made a league with them, a pact, that they would not kill them, but they would take them as servants. Later, Joshua realized he had a decision “without asking the Lord.” He had made a quick, foolish decision without asking counsel of the Lord. “I know what I’m doing, Lord.”

Today, it is always best to pray each day and “ask for God’s wisdom and counsel in all things…” Decisions will come quickly, and you might get ahead of yourself and “not ask counsel of the Lord.” When we do this, we always regret it later… So much for, “I know what I’m doing, Lord!”

Be sure to read Bobby’s message tomorrow morning to follow up!!!! Have a great day! Sherry
